The tools that make learning happen!
Neuroplasticity + Educational Therapy = Learning with Confidence
The Educational Therapy Journey
Step 1
Getting to know you
-
If you have not done so already, your child should receive formal educational testing. Such testing is performed by a psychologist to determine areas of strength, weakness, and impairment.
You may also be given some informal tests in the first several sessions. These tests help provide important data about the way you learn and how you perceive the material.
Haven’t been tested yet? No worries. You can begin your sessions with Michelle, our Educational Therapist and the founder of Developing Minds NC.net, while seeking the necessary assessments. She will teach you a brain-changing technique from the very first session. After the results of the testing have been received and interpreted, Michelle will provide you with an educational plan for subsequent sessions.
Step 2
Impactful lessons
-
Michelle will begin 80-minute sessions, which incorporate the most effective strategies to enhance your learning and improve your academic performance. Psst…these are skills you can apply to everyday life as well!
While there is homework with each assignment, it’s different from your school work. With each completed assignment you review with Michelle in the next session, you will be able to look back and see how fast you are developing the skills you need to crush this and gain more confidence!
Step 3
Confidence ignites
-
You made it! After working hard to complete impactful lessons with Michelle, you are performing at or above grade level in school with confidence and you see an improvement in your relationships as well. The sky is the limit for you from this point forward!
But, don’t worry. If you need us, we’re always here to cheer you on and offer tweaks to your learning to help you soar!

Educational therapy develops the whole child, teaching them HOW to think not just WHAT to think.
Using research-backed techniques that incorporate dynamic dialogue, interesting puzzles, and specific movements that stimulate the brain to change it at the root level.
If you like more technical information:
First, the therapist uses interactive language throughout each session. Socratic questioning requires the student to reach into their minds to recall and synthesize information to answer the questions the therapist is using to direct their thinking. As Socratic dialogue continues, the student responds to many different types of questions that encourage reflection, check for comprehension, and promote inductive reasoning. By requiring clear responses from the student the therapist tailors the discussion to the student’s individual needs.Individualized, intentional instruction begins with knowing the student’s weaknesses and tailoring instruction to stimulate those areas of the brain. Core academic skills but at a much more fundamental level. Perception, process thinking, and verbal expression are among the skills educational therapists are seeking to build. In addition, higher-order processing is promoted through visual and perceptual simulation, which in turn impacts cognitive functioning. The goal is to develop clear and efficient thinking so students know how to learn.
-
Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to form and change like plastic in response to stimulus.
The brain acts like a muscle that can be strengthened and shaped depending on the activities it undergoes.
-
First, people with learning differences are not of lesser intelligence than those with more normal ways of thinking and learning, their brains are just wired differently. George Washington, Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, and Charles Darwin all had "learning disability". A better way to refer to this family of neurological disorders is learning differences. Learning differences can include dyscalculia, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and auditory processing disorders. More technically, as defined by the Educational Therapists of the Carolinas, "it is a pattern of neurological dysfunction in the brain that causes a person to have difficulty correctly receiving information (perception), correctly processing that information once it is received (cognition), or satisfactorily responding to the information once it has been processed (written and verbal expression, visual-motor coordination, memory, etc)".
-
Yes! First, let’s be clear. You are an intelligent individual who learns differently. A learning “disorder” label does not define who you are or what you can learn. It simply means you may learn differently.
Michelle is a Certified Educational Therapist and Structured Literacy Dyslexia Specialist who will create individualized lesson plans using proven strategies that effect change in your confidence and academic performance. By applying the right combination of techniques you will learn at Developing Minds NC. You will gain confidence and accomplish great things academically. You can do this!

While ET is used to retrain the way you perceive subject material, ET is not used for digging deeper into a specific topic in your classroom at school. But, never fear! We’ve got you covered.
Developing Minds NC offers impactful summer tutoring sessions for topic-driven assistance.
-
Duration is contingent upon student and parent goals, the student’s current level of functioning, and the participation of both the student and parent. Michelle doesn’t consider her job done until the student performs at grade level.
Note: Educational therapy does not seek to improve academic areas directly as tutoring does. Instead, the emphasis is on the improvement of a person’s areas of difficulty in thinking skills. Parental involvement and student cooperation are key to the success of the program. Diligence and regularity in the completion of homework, particularly Rhythmic Writing, are essential for progress and a shortened duration.
